Reasons to Choose a Tulane Pre-College STEM Program

This program offers middle (Level 1) and high school (Level 2) enrichment courses developed with Tulane faculty and taught by highly qualified teachers and graduate students for students in grades 6 through 12. The courses are tailored to the needs of middle and high school students to explain complex concepts in a practical, understandable way. High school students looking for a more advanced experience can apply for our college credit-bearing option.

The program focuses on an array of disciplines, such as environmental science, computer science, robotics, engineering and physics, among others. Students have access to Tulane facilities, where they will conduct lab work and execute projects.

Participants can choose to live in the residence halls for the full college experience or commute and have the flexibility of living at home. Residential students will be supervised by staff throughout the duration of the program and will also have the benefit of a variety of evening and weekend activities. The Learning Environment

Various features of the Tulane learning environment differentiate the summer pre-college courses from other educational opportunities out there. All of Tulane’s pre-college STEM programs are built on the premise of prioritizing practical skill acquisition. The Tulane faculty believes in the importance of finding working solutions for some of the most common real-world problems. As a result, the courses focus on problem-based learning and the various applications of the engineering process.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) alignment:

Tulane Pre-College summer programs follow NGSS’ three principles of learning—crosscutting concepts, scientific practices, and disciplinary core ideas—to enhance the results of scientific educational endeavors.

Situational learning:

Interactions with New Orleans organizations and the community allow for the application of scientific principles in authentic settings.

Professional interactions:

Participants in the summer program learn from scientists, artists, writers, and engineers, who will give them an insider’s perspective about everything that their respective professions entail.
